There are thousands of window repair companies throughout the United States who claim they can fix a foggy window for less than $100. Unfortunately, the only way to repair a window is by replacing it and that is rarely less than $100. Window repair techniques usually involve some combination of drilling to extract the moisture and re-sealing or installing a one way valve to release future moisture. Unfortunately, these repairs are bogus. While they might clear up the fog, they don’t restore the performance benefits and, even worse, they might void your warranty.
The fog and moisture buildup between the panes is normally due to a broken seal. Since the insulating gas of argon or krypton has escaped, thermal performance is decreased. A window with a broken seal performs about as well as a dual paned window with normal air filling. The moisture is most likely to occur in hot summer months or cold winter months. During these times the temperature difference between the inside of the house and the outside are the most extreme and air condenses causing water droplets to form.
Many warranties cover broken seals for up to twenty years, but Dixie Super Windows are covered for life. So if you notice condensation, the first step you should take is calling the installer. If the installer doesn’t support the warranty anymore, or is out of business, than you should contact the manufacturer.
Window replacement is the only real repair. So if both the manufacturer and installer no longer respect the warranty, you can still contact a repairmen to replace the window, or replace the whole sash. It will be more expensive than the people who remove moisture from in between the panes, but paying $100 or more to have the moisture removed from the window is expensive considering it isn’t really repaired. Window condensation extraction is just a cosmetic enhancement.
