Radiant heat is what you feel when standing under direct sunlight. If you stand in your attic space on a sunny day, you’ll instantly feel the heat coming from the underside of the roof above. A majority of heat gain in a living space during summer is due to radiant heat transfer. The sun radiates into the attic space which heats the living spaces below. Regardless of insulation on the attic floor, up to 93% of ceiling heat gain in summer months is due to radiant heat from the attic above.
By adding a radiant barrier to an attic space, a majority of the heat can be blocked, reducing heat transfer into your living space by up to 50%. You can use your air conditioner less often and lower utility bills.
A double-sided radiant barrier will not only block summer heat, it will also prevent heat within your home from escaping. Up to 75% of heat loss in the winter is from radiant heat. The addition of a radiant barrier is a very effective way to reduce winter utility bills.
