The Most Common Roof Problems

Posted on Thursday, June 9th, 2011

Roofs are a luxury, or at least that’s how you will feel after you have a problem with one. Roof problems are a huge pain because not only can they wreck the inside of your house, but they demand immediate attention at a huge expense. Most people don’t save up their money, only to have it pored into a roof that needs fixing. When a roof is 100 years old, or it’s poorly installed, you will be likely to experience:

Leaky Roof

Leaky roof is one of the most common pains homeowners who like to have roofs will experience. Normally its due to a flashing detail that is not properly installed. It’s likely that the roof barrier, or membrane, is broken in some way. This happens because in order for a roof to properly work, roofers have to pay attention to the details along the edges and seams. If they don’t, this is where your roof is going to leak.

Blow-Offs

A blow off will happen because a roofer was making the same mistakes that cause a leaking roof. Normally water will be able to find it’s way through the gaps, but sometimes the water hasn’t been noticed. The gap that allows the water to penetrate also creates gaps where wind can catch the roof. Once a large storm rolls through with 40+ mph winds, the shingles will be lifted straight off.

Puddling Water

This is when the roof has not been properly constructed, or it has become so damaged that it begins to bow. This gives water an area to rest and relax on your roof. Once the sun comes out, that puddled water creates a magnifying glass for the sun’s rays to damage your roof.

Do Not Wait

Part of the pain of roof problems is that they need an immediate response. If you wait, it can mean dramatically increased costs down the line. It doesn’t take an expert to spot a roof problem. If you see gaps and spaces where water and wind can get under your roof, call a roofer before you notice the water. Once the water is in or the shingles are blown off, you’ve already waited too long. You should get it fixed now before it has the chance to become a greater expense and hassle.
