Energy savings during the holidays can be difficult to control, but a few tweaks can make a big difference. With all of the commotion of family and cooking, energy bills are probably the last thing on your mind. If you have prepared for winter by winterizing your home, than you don’t have much to worry about. But if you haven’t, it could lead to some uncomfortable nights for visitors. If you need to make some last minute tweaks to your home for holiday comfort, you can start here:
One of the biggest improvement in holiday technology is the use of LED’s for Christmas lights. LED’s last longer, produce less heat, and use much less energy than traditional fluorescent decorations. They are also much smaller and lighter so hanging them up is less of a task. Since LED’s use a fraction of the energy and last longer, you will save money over time. As an added bonus, their energy efficiency results in less heat production so your tree can live longer.
If you plan on having family and friends over, lower the thermostat a little bit. Everyone moving, cooking, and sitting around will generate much more heat than normal. A warm house will make guests drowsy and lethargic. Keep it a bit cooler to save money and keep everyone comfortable.
You can turn the heat down and take a warm bath. The holidays can be a stressful time of the year. With travelling, hosting, decorating, and wrapping, the action never stops. During the break, make sure you take the time to relax and enjoy yourself. Play some soft music, dim the lights, and just soak.
During the holidays, some people like to decorate with candles and build fires. While they might save a little energy, fire places actually suck the warm air out of a home when the fire pulls heat up through the chimney. Candles and fires might look great and smell good, but they pose a fire risk and decrease the efficiency of your home. Try to keep them at a minimum and always practice basic fire safety.
