When hiring a contractor, people should listen for whether or not a contractor wants a deposit. If contractors ask for a deposit – run. If a contractor is confident in their work and has the financial prowess to be a contractor, they won’t need any money until the customer is satisfied.
When hiring salespeople for contracting, sometimes they ask, “How do you get money after the job?” They think it’s dumb to get paid at completion, but it’s actually very smart. If someone goes to Las Vegas to gamble, casinos won’t give them money to gamble with, right? When a contractor goes into someone’s house, they are going to be making profit on the job. The contractor’s money should be at risk instead of the customer’s money.
It is the old fashioned way of doing business. Back then, they didn’t have contractors, they shook each others hands. How did they do this? They said, “It will take four days to do this.”
“When it is done, I’ll pay you money.” At the end of the fourth day, if it was not done, there would be a dispute. If the job was done right, the contractor was paid.
That’s the way it is supposed to be.
