Can Cleaning Improve The Energy Efficiency Of Your Home?

Posted on Friday, August 5th, 2011

If you were to leave your home vacant for a hundred years, nature would completely take it over and leave it in ruin. Cleaning and maintaining a home keeps nature out of our houses so that we can live in a comfortable environment. Machines and electronics, like people, function better when they are cleaned and maintained. Without our help, nature will quickly catch up and break them down. To prevent nature from creeping in prematurely, a few simple household maintenance and cleaning tasks will keep your home running smoothly and extend the lifetime of your appliances.

Replace The Air Filter

Air intake filters on your air conditioning and furnace units should be replaced at least every three months and every month during peak usage. If it looks dirty at all, it’s time to change it. The built up debris in the filter increases the burden on the fan unit causing it to use more energy than necessary. Since the unit has to work harder to provide the same results, it will also decrease the lifespan of your unit. For $4, you can buy a standard air filter and replace the old one.

Clean Air Conditioner Evaporator Coils

The cooling unit on an air conditioner is the evaporator coils. Since evaporator coils cause condensation, a drainage unit is built into the area that houses the coils. A side benefit of the drain is that it makes it very easy to clean. You can spray evaporator coil cleaner onto the coils and let it break down all of the grime. Then, spray it away with water to wash it down the drain.

Clean Air Intakes Of Computers

Have you ever looked inside a 2 or 3 year old computer? If you are like me, probably not. But it doesn’t hurt to open the case. The fans that keep your computer cool also collect massive amounts of dust. Getting into a computer case and vacuuming out all of the dust will keep your computer running cool and extend the life of your CPU.

Clean Condenser Coils On Refrigerators

The condenser coils on your refrigerator are often overlooked. Left to collect dirt and grime, it can burn out your unit prematurely. By cleaning the bottom and back of your fridge, you will save money on your monthly bill, but more importantly you will save a forced investment in a new fridge.

Keep It Clean

You can do all of these tasks in less than 30 minutes on any given day. It doesn’t take much time or effort and the results should be noticeable immediately. If you haven’t done any of these maintenance tasks in years, you are bound to see a decrease in your energy bill. More importantly, you will save big money in the long run since everything will last longer.
