In our last post, we listed 12 reasons vinyl is a green building material. But, it’s the characteristics of vinyl that make it both green and an excellent cladding choice. Who cares if something is green if it is inferior in every other way? Fortunately, compared to other building materials vinyl is superior because it is:
- Lightweight – reduces the amount of fuel used during transportation and installation.
- Durable – lasts for the life of your house.
- Maintenance Free – there isn’t a need to use paint, stains, solvents, sealers, and other chemicals.
- Standardized – ensures that products and colors meet or exceed ASTM standards.
- Energy Efficient – insulated vinyl siding boosts a home’s R-value.
- Clean – efficient manufacturing and installation produces almost no waste and it’s recyclable.
- Domestic – most of vinyl siding is made of chlorine extracted from salt and natural gas.
- Safe – vinyl emits significantly lower levels of toxic chemicals into the environment than alternatives. Also, silica-based fiber cement can cause silicosis which is an incurable lung disease. Vinyl installation requires no special instructions for installers to maintain health.
- Easy – it takes half of the energy to manufacture vinyl compared to brick. Installation is also much easier than alternatives.
There are other sidings you can use on your house, but vinyl is the best siding material. While other sidings have a hard time competing with vinyl because of the aforementioned reasons, its important to note that other siding materials are also unregulated. Vinyl siding is the only exterior cladding with third-party product certification to ensure that products and colors meet or exceed ASTM standards.
